He is a member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, Sawdust Art Festival, Festival of Arts,Southern California Artists Association, American Impressionist Society, and serves as an officer for First Thursdays Art Walk in Laguna Beach. He is an instructor of oil painting for the City of Laguna Beach and the Sawdust Art Festival. John is a registered artist in Who’s Who in American Art.
John paints en plein air (on location) using an impressionistic style half way between French and American impressionism. He applies thick, undiluted oil paint with a flat brush in such a manner that the colorful image changes in appearance depending on the lighting and viewing distance. The completed scene is intentionally out of focus up close, and very vivid from ten to twenty feet away. Literal detail is omitted and left to the viewer’s imagination, thereby becoming an impression rather than a literal rendering.
John’s objective is to dramatize the quality of light and stimulate a warm positve feeling of serenity and tranquility.
